Splatoon isn't doing better than Mario Kart 8. It's done better in certain weeks, but not in terms of total sales.
However, I don't think this is impossible. It just needs continued support, advertising and future bundling to get there. Which all seem likely. This could be another Yo-Kai Watch situation (except with a better opening, of course).
