They foresaw it, Reggie said that "we" (Nintendo) knew people wouldn't take the game with open arms, but we are releasing the game anyway.
Nintendo fans just need to wait for the next Nintendo Direct when Nintendo will explain why fans are wrong by not liking the game and explain to fans how much they want this Metroid.
