They don't need it yet, but in the near future they could decide between supporting sales with big releases and a lot of bundles or cut price already. If the first strategy is feasible, it should be preferred, while the first price cut, delayed to Q4 2016, could be bigger and more effective than $50. The best possible thing for Sony would be to be able to do the first cut at PS4 Slim launch. Right now they've been able to cut power consumption and weight by ~10%, but they'll need a die shrink of the APU to be able to make a Slim model, so major redesign schedule depends a lot on AMD.
