You do realize that most of the games on their handhelds are 3rd party?
They wouldn't be able to make games fast enough to support it with JUST Nintendo games.
Can the console succeed in the scenario you just described? Maybe, but like you mentioned only a moderate success. But I guess it doesn't matter if their in the lead, I know it doesn't to me.
Third parties have become a big part of the gaming scene. People want variety, without it Nintendo will just make another secondary console as you also mentioned.
I agree it can succeed without them, to a degree. But I disagree that it doesn't NEED them. If anything, 3rd parties don't need Nintendo to succeed, they have Sony and MS platforms to make games for.
