What benefits does Nintendo gets releasing the NX a year and a half after announcement?

They will formally announce it around March 2016, then unveil games and full hardware at E3 2016, launch in fall 2016 with Zelda.

not sure about the replacement of 3DS, there was a speculation that n3DS with face plates would also be coming to NoA. and with the list of 3DS games announced last E3. it got a good support of games.  I'm still thinking it would be launched at the same time with the home console. Late 2017.

If Nintendo is going to try the Fusion idea, they'll probably release both handheld and home console at the same time. Hell, they could bundle both versions for those interested, maybe with a couple of games as a reward.

I can see this happening.
