Because it just is, there are many more possibilities for people's entertianment than back then. You need to realize that 10 years is a very long time for technology in the 21st century, but you seem to have stayed back in the 20th together with Nintendo's executives.
Nintendo is an archaic organization that knows only how to sell toys, and cannot compete in the modern electronic entertainment industry. They are a dinosaur, and are never coming back from that. Their next home console will sell even worse than the current one.
They make archaic games for a very limited, shrinking market, and since the console buyers generally don't care for those games, and little children enjoy their tablets and phones more, they will never reach a wider audience.
