"Next gen" doesn't matter for Nintendo. Portable and Mobile is where the money was, is and will be.
Nintendo badly needs a successor for the New 3DS which also enables them to use one code base for all systems - thats what NX means.
It is technically possible to make the Wii U a NX console and maybe Nintendo will just do that.
For their next console Nintendo will wait for the REAL NEXT GEN GPUs with HBM to become main stream.
This way they could deliver more performance then PS4 at a fraction of the price. Which should be in the holiday 2018 timeframe...
