I feel like Microsoft had the right idea trying to essentially corner the controller modding market by releasing their own official "modded" controller, but at the same time, $150 is absurd for a controller that basically just has some magnets and extra plastic pieces. In the end, I feel competitive players already have brands they trust, hardware they're willing to go with, etc. Releasing their own overpriced elite controller would benefit very few people all in all and would probably cost Sony more to develop and distribute than they'd ever make off of it.

Valid points. I always felt that controllers should have evolved by now to where they used more than just your thumbs and index fingers. The X1 and PS4 should have come with rear paddles as standard. When I first used the Scuf 4PS(PS4 controller) it was awkward because we have never used our middle fingers for pressing buttons but after about 2 days it felt completely natural.
