Even releasing 2017, they would be pulling a Dreamcas since PS4 and X1 won't get a sucessor until 2019-21. And an early announcement would also kill Wii U sales badly because that would just confirm that the console will be abandoned.
There isn't really a way to release a platform without killing Wii U and/or 3DS. They tried the "3rd pillar" thing once and just killed the GBA instead of complementing it. Home console kill the U, portable kills the 3DS, Fusion kills both at once.
