While I tend to agree with Miyamoto I think it's sort of ironic that he the game he refers to is Starfox.

Of all things Nintendo, I'm actually less impressed with what I've seen of Starfoxes visual design so far.
That's because, despite the anthropomorphic Animals, all the environments seem to go for a sort of realistic look. I think I'd have taken a lot less issue with Starfoxes graphics on reveal if it had a more distinctive visual style. Be it cartoony like Mario Kart/Captain Toad/Animal Crossing or Artsy in the way that No Mans Sky is, stylized like the Bioshock games, georgous hand drawn or cell shaded style like WWHD/child of light/Okami/Bastion, or hell, even a toy-like aesthetic like the lego games.
If they wanted to evoke this sort of retro N64 low polygon look, they should have run with that and made it more extreme, modernized it and truly used it as a style imo. As it is Starfoxes visuals are just ok, when they could be amazing.
Some of the more realistic games out there are also georgeous because of the visual design behind them like the Last of Us or Bloodborne, for example.

All in all I do agree with him though, I much pefer for a game to have a clear visual Identity.
