Everybody even mentioning WW1: you have to understand how uninteresting the battles of WW1 were. They were battles for maybe a mile of land at a time, almost all based out of trenches, with a lot of waiting, shooting over no man's land, and/or going over the trenches to risk what was almost certain death by machine gun fire. This wasn't a time of secret operations, big foot soldier invasions, or covert ops of any kind. It was a time of seeing just how good you were at sitting in a trench without your foot skin starting to rot off from being over exposed to moisture.

What are you talking about? One of the things that defined WW I were trench raids, covert operations in which you faced the horror of a mile of battered hellscape with the omnipresent threat of machinegun and sniper fire hanging over you. All of this in order to infiltrate the enemy barracks to stealthily gather intel, sabotague supplies and slit the throats of the enemies while they slept. These raids often ended with men ruthlessly battling to the death with medieval style weapons. A WW I shooter could combine first person shooting with the best elements of horror and stealth games and maybe even some "tower defense" and beat 'em up sequences for good measure. You could use that setting to create a phenominal game with a bit of imagination.
