Everybody even mentioning WW1: you have to understand how uninteresting the battles of WW1 were. They were battles for maybe a mile of land at a time, almost all based out of trenches, with a lot of waiting, shooting over no man's land, and/or going over the trenches to risk what was almost certain death by machine gun fire. This wasn't a time of secret operations, big foot soldier invasions, or covert ops of any kind. It was a time of seeing just how good you were at sitting in a trench without your foot skin starting to rot off from being over exposed to moisture.
