Well 3DS did poorly early on until the price was reduced. N64 and Gamecube didn't do mega numbers at a relatively low price, but they also didn't bomb like Wii U. The original Wii was a great success because price and gimmick. A high priced Wii wouldn't have been as successful. If the Wii U launched for $199 and the tablet was optional (only required for a few titles), I guarantee their situation would be less bleak. Nintendo doesn't need a massive userbase to move a lot of software. But their current userbase is just abysmal. Nintendo doesn't need core 3rd party games, we already have Playstation, Xbox, and PC vying for that. Nintendo has a loyal following and an ability to appeal to casual audience. They also have a mobile console market locked. Again, their best bet is giving us a home/portable console. They don't need a machine with cutting edge graphics, that isn't their audience. |
The casual audience is fickle and payed no attention to the Wii U, they are still with their wiis in the closet and only play it when family comes around (much like scrabble or monopoly). Nintendo wanted to appease this audience and the hardcore audience with the Wii U.. unfortunately the casual audience never bought in and the 10 million who bought Wii U are hardcore. Alot of people left nintendo for sony/xbox. If they could get these people to buy NX as a secondary console then Nintendo would probably be selling much more..
Alot of core gamers say I want to play Bayonetta 2 and Zelda but I wouldn't buy a 350$ system for 2 games. Nintendo needs to create IP that appeals to this core audience and Splatoon is a step in the right direction. They also need development help in creating games more consistently throughout the year.
