To me, the stage is about the checkerboard shape. There are a lot of opportunities to sneak your way through the firefight behind enemy lines in Port Mackerel. It's difficult to do that in most other stages, where the line of scrimmage is usually out in the open. If the containers were simple (inkable) platforms, they'd be usable as sentry posts to prevent that sort of strategy, which would rob the map of what makes it unique imo.
