You know, even though I had finished ICO many times it wasn't until I watched that first vid that I became aware of how you're not actually under threat in the final shadow sequence (before final boss). It was a good way to play with game conventions and expectations by putting that story realization on your shoulders and making you forget combat didn't work like other games. Even after the first time the meaning of what I was doing or what was happening was always what I thought about instead of the (harmless) gameplay obstacle. Then the boss fight doesn't have that kind of story weight so the convention comes "back" (never was there) the only time that you're actually alone facing an enemy.
And I can't stress enough the level design..the architecture of the castle was pure genious. It was grand, complex but everything was connected and simple to navigate. I actually recommend at least once doing a speed run (I know the game is not suited for that kind of fast/stressful thing but it'll give you an whole new look on the level design) just for that reason alone, you'll find connections that you never even saw were there.
