Honestly, i think it is more simple.

For the first time in its life, Wii U has a pretty much solid line-up for the following months. Nintendo just wanted to use their best marketing opportunity to sell their upcoming games, instead of highlight over games far from realease. The problems is, everyone got used to new reveals, so when they changed the strategy, people didn't got it.

Also they probably thought they were past the point where they had to prove every month that they wouldn't drop the Wii U, which was obviously a mistake, just look the threads that poped up after 1 bad day.
