I heard the Jaguar was a pretty advance system... Truly ahead of its time.

In the mid-90s, the 3DO was the great white hope. It was an all-in-one "multimedia" system. It had the backing of Matsushita (Panasonic) and Goldstar (LG). Its primary software backer was Electronic Arts. 3DO was ran by the guy who founded EA, Trip Hawkins. I'd say those companies were pretty serious even if the console itself bombed.
Sony could have easily gone the same way as these other electronics giants except that they actually made sure to get some good developers behind the PS1.
And even that might not have helped them any, had Nintendo only made the N64 a CD-ROM based system and held onto Squaresoft and Enix.
