It's a family of devices that share a common software API. Games made on that API are available on all devices (theoretically speaking). Due to Nintendo's typical hardware production history, it's safe to assume that the first entry in this family of devices will be a handheld, soon followed by a home device possibly in parallel with a more expensive home device (so people can choose). |
ok good. That is basically what I was thinking of and described previously as well.
However, my opinion is that the platform will be on mobile/handheld/home devices in 2016. Nintendo needs a new set of hardware to drive their brand and IPs. I see 2016 showcasing a new handheld and home console that share many basic architectural designs and of course a sofware structure that allows a shared library.
I do think it would also contain a software based backwards compatibility with WiiU/3DS family and finally a fully identical VC and other digital catalog. The mobile component won't be 100% identical but will be compliments and heavily linked.
... and I do agree that it will likely begin to follow a hardware cycle where new devices will come out far more regularly. MSony will do this by next hardware releases as well, IMO.
