It would have been a megaton the year consoles released. 2 years later, its not as huge anymore.

I don't think it would be. It's a nice feature and I would love to have it on PS4 too, but it doesn't change a lot of things. Let's see some cases:

- Genesis had an add-on that allowed to play SMS games. Almost nobody had it.

- The PS3 and 360 had BC. However, almost everyone had a PS2 while nobody had an OG Xbox. So it should be an advantage for Sony, allowing people to play their PS2 games (we even had a big PS2 title, GOW 2, releasing after the PS3). This didn't saved Sony from getting soundly beaten.

- The Slim PS3 didn't had BC. Its launch with a better price point, even without BC, improved a lot PS3 sales performance.

So I think that what really makes difference for a consoles is price and games. People don't want to buy new consoles to play PS360 games, they want to play new gen games. I've used BC very rarely during the years. I played Gran Turismo 2 once on my PS2 just to see if it worked. On Vita, I used it to play half an hour of Monster Hunter and maybe one hour of GTA for the PSP. In both cases, it was because I got the games for free on PS+, but didn't played a lot yet.

It's a cool feature, of course. But it won't move a lot of units. We can say the same for Sony's conference. Shenmue 3 won't move units. Dreams, maybe. But the real deal for mainstream was UC4, Battlefront and the CoD deal.

PS3 wasn't soundly beaten, ever.  People just acted like it was because Sony said they would overtake 360 within a year and move on.  Truthfully, the PS3 outsold the 360 almost every year except one since the day it launched, even when it cost $100-$200 more.  Did people not care about BC or did the price point hurt them?  It's not that simple.

*edit*  Also, I'm a PSP/Vita and DS/3DS owner.  I probably bought as many PSP games for Vita as I did Vita games for Vita since launch day!  And I'm still buying DS games for 3DS.  My most played 3DS game (according to the Activity Feed) is Advance Wars Dual Strike!!
