It could have been a lot better, that's for sure.
Starfox and Super Mario Maker looked neat though - in the Treehouse, not so much in the Direct itself. As for Mario Tennis, I'll hold my judgement until I see more about it. No Fatal Frame V was sad, but I guess that's due to voiceacting being in the works, japanese voiceacting in a game that got already released there a long time ago would have raised some question why not releasing it right now.
The 3DS was a bit better off with more new games, but again missing heavy hitters.
They should have put Earthbound Beginnings into the Direct and release the game directly after the presentation rather than releasing it 2 days before the show. Would have been instant awesome to finally get the game in the west.
Also some incoming Indiegame showcase would have been nice. If the big one are not supporting you anymore, then show the support you get from the smaller devs.
I can understand however why Nintendo is showing and developing more smaller titles lately: Big Titles like a real next Metroid or Paper Mario take a very long time to develop, and Time is something Nintendo sorely lacks since the big publishers are gone as that would create even bigger droughts than what they already have. One or 2 big games might still come to Wii U (unannounced ones, not speaking of Zelda or Xenoblade here), but they are forced to make smaller, faster to create productions to simply produce more games. It's the only way they have to be able to show a staggering 15 games with only one of them being a third party title.
That all said, I can't but praise the fact that they managed to show 15 titles, 14 of which ore their own creations. There just can't be much more in development in any showable state or japan-exclusive with the number of studios Nintendo owns. I do hope however we'll get informations about other new games througout the year as the other games near completion and release. And I hope next year's Digital Event comes with some heavy hitters.
