I think you may be confusing me with another poster on this point, I didn't say that but you came close with this ..."Well yes, not all games appeal to everyone, but you are flat out ignoring a genre of gaming and acting as if splatoon is the first game to have done things right."
At second bolded ... but you did say exactly that ..."Splatoon really should not be the first fps for a 14 year old interested in the fps genre considering there are other appropriate classics" I won't even say you are wrong with what you said there, the other games you mentioned would be alright for my 14 year old, but splatoon is a blast in my opinion, and could be an alright option for introducing a younger player to the genre.
The rating system isn't perfect, it is a guidline rather than a law (not trying to say laws are perfect ...)

@ the bolded, if it is true, my apologies, I did not mean to confuse you with the other commentator
@ the underlined, I do agree with both statements even though they may seem to contradict each other.
While splatoon is a good intro to the fps genre, a 14 year old would be 13 by the age of splatoon's announcement. If at any point in between Splatoon's announcement and release that kid shows in interest in the fps genre, it would have been a great idea to get him to play portal 2 or metroid prime, rather than to have him wait for splatoon. This is why I am annoyed when people claim splatoon to be the first age appropriate shooter (not directed to you obviously, just the idea that is being passed around). Because critically received fps titles get overlooked by a game with average reviews.
