Thing is, I don't they really are. When a new game like Ori or Child of Light comes out - a classic 2D game with great production - it tends to do well both critically and commercially. They may not sell like COD, but a few million is possible.
But the thing is, people who like them LOVE them. The kickstarter responses are phenominal. For fans of classic genres, if said tomorrow that Wii U was going to be the exclusive home of M#9, Bloodstained and a classic FF game, all with modern production values, I can see some buying the system for those games alone; or at least in combo with Nintendo's own titles, XCX, B2, D3, etc. I think a group of old school titles could push a few million extra hardware units if done right.
