I don't see them getting much marketing mileage out of DLC packs. If someone hasn't bought the game after friends tell them it's hella fun with the content that's on the disc AND playable, then I don't see how an additional map pack or 3 is going to convince them.

If you have a Wii U and you're friends are telling you the game is brilliant, you're either already lined up to buy it, or you just don;t have the same taste in games as your friends. If you are the only one of your friends that has a PS4 or Xb one and everyone else has a Wii U, then you definitely don't have the same taste in games as your friends, and Splatoon is also probably not on your radar.

People are expecting far too much from this little game that could. We're looking at a 500K opening week. Crow serving sales no doubt for those who thought 500K lifetime. But 500K first week is good, not awesomeness!!! Destiny was new IP, PS4 had an install base not all that much more than Wii U does today. You know what that got week one on PS4 alone? 2.2 million without digital counted*. Now that's awesome for a new IP.

I wish people would stop putting the weight of the world on Splatoon and just celebrate it as being a sucessfully launched new IP for Wii U. I don't think that Splatoon is going to turn the gaming world on its head of itself. But what I hope it might do is convince Nintendo that it can invest in completely new IP that does not lean on established characters from IP that dates back multiple generations. And that this ushers in a new era of Nintendo creating many more completely new IP that can be sustained beyond just one generation that rose and fell based on a peripheral that could not sustain the interest of the core gaming demographic. And by core I mean people who love gaming for gaming, not people who pretend that they are doing something healthy and active in front of their TV but "no I don't play video games, except sometimes with my kids."

*According to VGChartz, which we all know is inaccurate. But we do know that Destiny has sold multiple millions on PS4 even if the opening week is wrong by a large margin.
