Good marketing, launched at right price, MS messed up consoles reveal, Ninty launched at wrong time priced to high, good games, good variety of games, popular first party IPs and a good reputation for 1st party development.
Not saying that Sony have the best games or the best 1st party developers on their consoles because that's subjective. But they have both games and developers of high standard, mix in the other points above and you get the success they have right now.
