"Average at best" is not at all how I would describe Resistance. Certainly not a franchise that sold millions per title and received review scores in the mid-80's. The multiplayer never really seemed to work but the single player of each title was really good. I just think it boils down to Insomniac not being interested in it anymore and Sony not wanting to shell out the cash for it right now to have another studio do it when they could be using that money to fund new IPs or continue franchises more popular and/or commercially successful.

A lot games scored well in the 7th gen, but fewer pass the test of time. Resistance is among the games that reviewed well but not fondly remembered. Same goes for Killzone. Killzone 2 has an amazing metascore but nobody talks about that game fondly.

A good Resistance game could potentially sell millions because its already an established IP. A new Resistance is actually less risky than a new IP. They could find another team to develop a reboot or reimagine Resistance. The bar Insomniac set wasn't very high anyhow.

I dunno, maybe Resistance should turn into a 3rd person game and go head to head with Gears. That PSP release of Resistance actually seemed like good direction for the series. PS4 already has plenty of FPS games, maybe they need to use Resistance to do something a little different.
