I agree whole heartedly. Smash and Kart are my son's games. He kicks the crap out of me on those. He has an edge on me in Splatoon since he has already completed all the Amiibo chalenges and the single player. He has better gear in short. Alas some of us have to work.
It is a fun ass game though and the matches go by so quickly that I don't know how much the lack of voice chat (that I likely wouldn't use anyway) hurts the game. Very rarely do I have a match with more than a couple people with their names written in english anyway.
