Gears wins no contest for me.
I prefer TPS. If it's a FPS, I cannot stand it being linear (level based). That's why I could never get into Halo, Bioshock, Wolfenstein, CoD, whatever else...
Then, Gears just has more memorable characters and story, it's more...human...than a silent space marine with a computer telling him what to do.
Also, Gears invented Horde mode. The best mode ever made. Halo's copy of it is just - boring.
Gears had couch co-op, so I could enjoy it with my wife.
I tried to play Halo 3 and 4, and both times quit barely halfway through.
Gears I finished multiple times, solo, co-op, easier, harder...
