It would not be as simple as just selling the Wii U without a Gamepad obviously. There are many games that - at least in their current state - depend upon the Gamepad because they assume you have it. Splatoon, Super Mario 3D World, Captain Toad, and Nintendo Land are examples of just some games that wouldn't be playable on such a console currently.

Surely at this stage Nintendo can cut the price without having to remove the Gamepad - the console is old enough now.
