Yes I do play games with friends, and I have multiple controllers (I actually have between two to four controllers for every console i own - depending on where it is in the house), I dont see your point. Controller runs out of power, get another controller, plug controller without power into console to charge. How is that any more difficult than "hold on, need to replace the batteries". You could complain about the cost of needing multiple controllers, I would accept that as a valid point as they are fairly expensive, but if you play with friends alot, then it makes sense to buy more controllers, thats the cost of wanting to play with lots of people.
But for me I hate external rechargable batteries, more bits you need hanging around your house cluttering it up.
Hardly anyone I know would champion the benefits of having to use external batteries and having to plug in a external hard disk. That is poor manufacturing design.
One little thing about the external HD, this is one of the issues I had with the MS marketting of the XBO, the XBO was "The only machine you'll need" was part of their strategy, unless you needed a bigger HD, or connecting it to a set top box etc.. it was so badly designed/thought about in the first place.

I like having an External HD. It doesn't clutter anything up since its just right next to the Xbox. And if something happens where I want a new slim Xbox and I sell my old one I don't ever have to waste time re-downloading a bunch of stuff. I just plug it into any Xbox and there are my games. Its way easier than bringing over a bunch of game cases to a friend's too.
Rechargeable batteries are pretty much the same type of situation that you stated with your extra controllers. I keep some batteries charged up and if the ones I'm using get low, I change em out and put the low ones on the charger.

I have my main consoles in the living room, which when you have a new crazy kitten running around, and additional box for it to attack is not the best of ideas...lol :)
If you like it, thats fine, I'm more stating the fact that someone complaining that its the worst thing ever about not having rechargable batteries is a mute point when you can just plug in the device and charge them... there is no argument to be had there.
