I do not believe that the Wii U has irreparably harmed Nintendo's image at this point. Depending on how Nintendo chooses to proceed, the Wii U could either build-up or damage Nintendo's reputation with gamers.

If Nintendo chooses to support the Wii U well for a good 4 years with 1st party releases and give fans titles like Zelda U and Metroid U, then I think the Wii U could be long remembered as an amazing console that was commercially underrated (like the Dreamcast). That said, if Nintendo chooses to cut support for the Wii U after 2015 and hastily jump ship to the NX then this can harm Nintendo's reputation.

If Nintendo decides to port Zelda U to the NX either as a dual release or an NX exclusive, then this would probably be the most harmful thing that Nintendo could do. They will lose thousands of fans and the trust issues will be as severe as what we saw after the Sega Saturn was abruptly discontinued.
