Again, she doesn't need to be a warrior. I love Princess Mononoke, and I want the game to be similar too, but that doesn't mean she needs to be a warrior. That doesn't mean she needs to be inept at combat either, though. Many Zelda's posessed combat training. Some were archers. Some were pirates. Others were ninjas. Personally, I'd love to see a Zelda who was slightly oppressive and slightly tyrannical, out of the desire to protect her kingdom at all costs. Obviously she would soften up as the game progressed, but her strength doesn't need to come from her own combat prowess. She holds command of the entire Hylian army. That is power. Since you seem to like Studio Ghibli, you should recognise Princess Kushana from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
Zelda should be like her in one game. |
Glad to see you enjoy Ghibli films as well, including Mononoke and Nausicaa (arguably not a Ghibli film but whatever)! I would love to see a Zelda game where Zelda herself is like Princess Kushana. But in order for the next Zelda to be as similar as Princess Mononoke as possible, I think its necessary if she acts more like San (Princess Mononoke).
And with little information we have so far on Zelda U, it seems like this game adopts many elements from Princess Mononke than any other Ghibli film. For instance Link looks very similar to Ashitaka already. From what we seen in the VGA gameplay video, Link seems to wear a blue clothing later in the journey because he already has a couple of items like the sword, bow and arrow, sail cloth, and Epona herself. This mean his blue clothing could be his main garb throughout the game, just like Ashitaka (the main male protagonist in the movie).
Not only that, but Link also wears a hood that cover his face, just like Ashitake did in the beginning of his journey and this was not only shown in the E3 reveal but also in the VGA gameplay trailer. To top it off, we have only seen Link use bow and arrows in both videos of the game. In the movie, Ashitaka seems to be more skilled in archery than sword fighting (although he's pretty damn good at that as well!).
Fans also indicate one of the beginning scene of Nago chasing Ashitaka is similar to the futuristic monster chasing Link.

The fact that there are also villagers wearing straw hats in the Zelda U trailer is even more telling.
This brings me to the point that Nintendo can go all in with the Princess Mononoke theme and make Zelda herself a warrior. She could have been abandoned or lost in the wilderness as a baby and those machines (or perhaps their masters) took it upon themselves to raise and train her to fight against humans in the upcoming war?
If so we can potentially have a scene like below where Link stumbles upon a village that also antagonize these futursitic creatures and is faced to stop the conflict between the two from getting even worse.
