My favorite is Yoshi. It's a difficult enemy that attaches itself to Mario's sprite and can only be defeated by getting hurt and letting it fall into a bottomless pit. My second favorite is Mario himself because he can't overcome his mushroom addiction and he always loses all of his savings after each level.
