That's only because Mrs Brown got on TV and done a whole skit about it. People here are massivly backward and without Brendan O'Connor doing that among others the vote would have been very different. Don't think Ireland is some progressive country because it certainly is not, although I'm wondering if it's time for Ming Flannagan to get a referendum on legalizing medical cocain ...er...cannabis.

I'm sorry you feel that way.  In my opinion you could not be  more wrong.

What happened in this Referendum was confirmation of something I have always known.  The majority of people, when given the opportunity, have a tremendous capacity for empathy, decency and generosity of spirit.   In this case, the people of Ireland grasped the opportunity to demonstrate that spectacularly.  I have no doubt the same decency and generosity of spirit would be replicated in many, many other countries around the world if given the chance.

The beauty of this result is that the right of same sex couples to marry is enshrined, not just in law, but in the Constitution.  Never, in the future, will a Government be able to repeal this right without getting the people to vote for that change in another Referndum.  That will never happen.

Backward?  I beg to differ.

You are far too young to be this cynical.
