novel is not the same as innovative.
innovative means a new idea on how do do something, that new thing as a meaningful improvement on the way that something is done, and the idea has a lasting impact.
the gamepad fails 2 of the 3 criteria to call it innovative. the gamepad is novel but not innovative.
