Honestly I have the same feeling but I still enjoy my 3DS.
I really think its because modern portable games are trying to be big and some begin to play like home console games which is actually a bad idea.
No one wants to play home console games on a portable, hence why I feel games like Killzone Mercenary fell short.
Couple in the ever decreasing battery life with each gen and you get a short lived (battery wise) portable console overextending.
