This isn't an all-or-nothing proposition. Some people did, in fact, buy a Wii for Wii Sports. And some of those who bought a Wii for Zelda or another game may have not bought an additional game because Wii Sports came with the package.

And so if you count Wii Sports, attach rates seem too high, but if you don't count Wii Sports, attach rates seem too low. The fact is that SOME, but not ALL sales of Wii Sports should be counted, because SOME, but not ALL people had their software buying affected by the pack-in.

But no one likes that, because everyone is either trying to inflate or diminish the Wii's success; not truthfully evaluate it.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
