Here's the thing, while Castlevania did start on Nintendo home consoles it has not been on one since the apparently horrible Castlevania Judgement, instead they have all been on their handhelds. And I'm sorry but every Nintendo handheld has just as much (if not more) ownership overlap with non-Nintendo home consoles as it has with Nintendo home consoles.

So if someone had said that the 3DS should have been a priority, since after all the majority of Castlevania titles in the last 15 years or so had been on Nintendo handhelds, then I would have agreed. But on the Wii U? Not really. Lowest installbase and a hardware architecture that apparently makes porting to the machine a bigger chore then with all the other systems, really doesn't scream first priority to me.

And looking at the Kickstarter I'd say that they did go where the fans are, cause I'm pretty sure that it's not 1000s of Wii U only owners that made those donations in the hope of their being a Wii U stretch goal at the bottom.

Judgement was spinoff fighting series no one asked for.

Targeting precisely the right audience matters more than targeting the biggest one. And I agree missing the 3DS is as big a miss as not going with WiiU. I really think the call to go with UE4 (which is supported for practically everything but 3DS & WiiU) was somewhat a bad technical call given that you could make an equally great Metroidvania with a platform that can hit the Nintendo platform out the box. But I understand there's a constellation of other interests in the UE4 decision (licensing costs, developer expertise), but those are things that can easily be adjusted to more easily reach your audience. Especially when you're creating a 2D game (which shouldn't be that technically demanding).

Porting to WiiU doesn't have to be a chore. Publishers/Developers don't avoid it for technical reasons, they avoid it because most other games don't sell well.

But there's exception to that. Games that fit well into the wheelhouse of Nintendo-like nostalgia can sell really well on WiiU and 3DS, especially when they're well done. Shovel Knight is evidence of that. Up until the release on PS and Xbox, nearly 2/3 sales of Shovel Knight (split nearly 50/50 3DS and WiiU) were on a Nintendo platform compared to PC.

Castlevania/Igavania is clearly one of those things in that same kind of wheelhouse as Shovel Knight.

It looks as though based on the OP, that the team may very well end up taking on the "chore" to port to WiiU.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
