I've really never understood this argument. It is basically setting up a situation where selling hardware is detrimental to this measurement of success. You could end up with a hypothetical scenario where Mario Kart 8 sold more and the Wii U sold more, but that is somehow worse because you want to judge it relative to the user base.
I know the VGC numbers have some issues, but for the sake of argument let's use them in an example.
MK8: 4.43m
Wii U: 9.48m
MK8 sold to 46.7% of the user base.
Now let's take a hypothetical situation.
MK8: 5.2m
Wii U: 11.56m
MK8 sold to 45% of the user base.
So the hypothetical scenario sold more hardware and software. Is it really sincere to say that the actual results performed better than the hypothetical just because it sold to a higher percentage of the user base?
