Yes, unfortunatly, but luckily, most of the game discs can at one point be ripped to save the game. And while digital doesn't wear out, if a platform like Steam (let's hope not) would go down, a lot of people would lose their games (even though Steam has a clause that let's you download and keep your games, but I wonder how in the name a company that would go under would be able to keep their servers running).

Bottom line, I think gaming needs to have some kind of preservation society, like film does. It's a part of our culture and history, just as much as cinema.

There are multiple groups like MAME, but for modern PC games, this won't be easy.
To start, a lot of the online functions would have to be ripped out of a game before it can just be stored still function.
