Well Iwata & Miyamoto have both made comments that hint at such a scenario. I don't think price/energy efficiency will be a huge prblem.

NX Portable-300 gflop, 2gb RAM, 540p, $249.99

NX Console-1.2 tflop, 8gb RAM, 1080p, $249.99

Something like that in 2016/2017 should be attainable.

That would be a potential but I think they need to be a bit more future proof this time around and keep up with the PS5 and the next Xbox. That is if they want to remain profitable and regain market dominance. I also don't think Nintendo want's another loss like the Wii U. Any console that doesn't go 4k next gen is going to suffer a HUGE consequence as by 2017 4K TV's will be the household standard. It could end up looking worse than the Wii did on a full 1080p screen. Smart TV's do help this to an extent but we are entering an era where holding back in power is no longer a viable option. Consoles are going to take another leap the way the 6th to 7th gen was.

Consoles have always had a huge leap small step formula for generations. I'll break down what I mean by this. I will only be mentioning the most significant consoles.

We will start with 3rd Generation. This was a huge leap and a revolution. This brought a huge jump to quality of games and the 8-bit generation.
NES and Sega Master System

4th Gen was a small step and an evolution. This entered the age of 16 bit and games look better and more pleasing to the eye.
Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis

5th Gen was a huge leap and a revolution that brought us our first venture of 3D game worlds to consoles
N64, PlayStation, and Sega Saturn

6th gen was a small step and a very noticeable evolution. Games looked far more pleasing to the eye
PS2, Game Cube, and Xbox

7th gen was a huge leap and a revolution that brought us the era of HD gaming a vibrant of colors and textures
Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii

8th gen is the current gen and it is a little early to make proper judgements. It is clear that it is a small step and an evolution. HD looks more pleasing to the eye and framerates have been more stable and the change of graphic quality is debated by gamers but there is no doubt that it looks better than 7th gen!
PS4, Xbox One (1080p debate applies), Wii U (Debatable for 1080p but lackluster in the pleasing of the eye)

9th Gen? We can't say much but I would say that the age of 4k and VR is upon us.
