Nintendo revealed it during their partnership with DeNA to make mobile games because they feared, and with a good reason, that many would see that move as a sign of Nintendo leaving the console business and going mobile, and they wanted to avoid that.

I understand why they did it, just kind of sucks in general to be like "Hey guys we're making a new thing! You'll have to wait a year to hear about it, so lets focus on something we know will be replaced soon by this mystery product" We all knew Nintendo was making new hardware it's just an unfortunate position.

Yeah, but they had no choice.

Even with the reveal of the NX, I read a couple of articles (that were later removed) stating that Nintendo was leaving the console market. Imagine what would have happened if they didn't announce that they were working on the NX!
