Depends on your style. 4 is decent but has pacing issues, 5 is pretty good and has the best story of the 4 DS DQ games and involves marriage and aging (the game goes from childhood to adulthood to etc.), 6 is probably the most "light hearted" and is lengthy but not too long, has a lot of fun with what it is and never takes itself too seriously and has a lot of clever items you'll use in the overworld, 9 is the "newest" and the longest of the 4 and is in 3D vs the other 3 that use DQ7's PS1 era 2D sprites in 3D environments and has a lot of quest missions and customizable party members. 8 is also really good, fully orcastrated, British VA, fully 3D and a pretty lengthy game.
7 is somewhat rare and was only released in Japan and the US. 1-3 range from common to almost impossible to find. However 1-3, 4-6, and 8 are availible on iOS/Android.
I'd personally start with 5, 6, or 8
