The criticism I heard the most was poor online during the launch period, poor AI and oversaturated genre (i.e it didn't bring anything new to the table).

You apparently also hadn't heard that the game had announced free post launch DLC before the game was out, so how is what you've heard relevant? The complaints based on a lack of content where there in several reviews.

I didn't follow the game pre-launch (so disregard my earlier comment on the free dlc, I was wrong), but did watch the reviews on youtube and those complaints were mentioned the most. Although I watch a lot of independent reviewers.
