Microsoft has fingers in a LOT of pies; I don't think that the fact that they have been pushing digital distribution so hard is evidence at all that they weren't 'serious' about HD DVD. And MS is also OBSESSED with controlling which standards evolve. If they picked HD DVD for whatever reason over Blu-ray they would have been fighting just to see it become the standard.
