Splatoon is a new IP, with completely different gameplay than anything they've done. And they're really busy supporting the console by themselves. The thing is, gameplay adjustment and balance concerns takes a huge ammount of testing and feedback when dealing with something this new. As nintendo releases this, the players will take a big role on helping the game development and save them a time they're not willing to lose. That is how most software is built nowadays, specially non gaming stuff. It just shows nintendo is getting on with the times, whether it's a good change for people who are particularly excited to play this game or not. But don't worry, Splatoon will eventually get awesome and spawn a much more awesome sequel.
