Theist is someone who believes in the existence of a god, but doesn't believe in the holy scriptures? (Believes they were written by men.) Correct?

I'd be much more likely to be a theist than religious in that case.
But at the moment I am neither.

Theists are anyone who believes in a God.  Religious or not.  It's an all encompassing term.

On topic, I'm a Christian here.  I avoid religious threads primarily because forums are a pretty rough place to host them.  I will say that, in address to choices, whether you believe your beliefs are a choice or not is all about your worldview.  A purely materialistic (only the physical exists) atheistic worldview carried to its logical conclusion excludes the possibility of choice by nature.
