You will be able to play with your friends any time, its just the special matchmaking options that will be available after an update.

Guess I misunderstood... In any case it doesn't really affect me too much, I'll mostly be playing the single player stages and a few random online matches, unless I do somehow get hooked on playing this game online. In an case, I just hope the single player "campaign" isn't too short.
