Will that then actually give Publishers Faith in 3D Platforms. Sure it could have done well on kickstarter ( Most people donating are huge fans of rare ) but if it sells nothing to the general public, then publishers will not have any faith in it or games of it genre. Post-Kickstarter sales are far from irrelevant infact they will either make or break the faith publishers will have in 3D platforms. Also remember the Ouya got over $8,000,000 on kickstarter alone ( It later on also got funds from indie devs and so on ) yet it then went on to become a commercial failure. |
Pretty much this, for any genre. Not that this will actually change publishers minds per se - both Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity were massivelly succesful Kickstarters, both appear to have quite good sales after Kickstarter for cRPGs (300-400K @ $40-$45), and Numenera will most likley be around that, but I don't see, at least not yet, any of the big publishers making any cRPGs - even if its under something like Ubisoft's smaller projects division.
The fact is that most highly succeful Kicstarters are from well established devs in the genre, and although they might have good sales after release, those genres are not mainstream - hence, all I can see happening is for big publishers eventually trying to strike a deal with those same exact people, or fund someone who is well known in his, now, more or less, niche genre, but I don't see genres getting back to mainstream so easily just because of few succeful KS games.
If anything, if there's a game big publishers are keen to learn from, it's that scam...I mean success called Star Citizen.
