The entire concept is flawed. Valve sold some moronic companies on the idea that it would be desirable for said companies to compete with each other on who sells the most Steam machines. This essentially means that said companies will participate in a race to the bottom and take losses while Gabe Newell sits in his office with a big fat smile on his face, because Valve has someone else doing the unpleasant work for them. If Steam machines would succeed against all odds, Valve would roll in the cash; if Steam machines fail (and that's very probable), Valve walks away unharmed because they didn't take any risks.

The concept isn't really new either, because the 3DO was handled in much the same way. Before too long, the hardware manufacturers will realize that they got played and get out as soon as possible.

Bingo, Newell, former Microsoft employee, is waging a high risk high potential reward againts Windows and DirectX.  His customers are requested new games, like Half Life 3, but instead he is spending company resources on a new OS and other tool.  It's could work out very well for them, but doesn't seem likely.  Seems even less likely with all their latest blunders - and the controller might be interesting, but I haven't tried it yet.

And as ktay95 said, these Steam Machines are PC's, they aren't being subsized like an Xbox One or a PS4.  So we aren't getting a same price giant performance bump or any other huge reason to get the SteamBox.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.
