Like I said, didn't want to risk being screwed over by the AI and thought I for sure could make it! Not sure about a set timing, but naturally I wasn't going to play the track more than I had to to find out lel, and even if I did know, that doesn't necessarily mean I can do anything about it. Also prior to MK8 there are hidden requirements towards getting a 3 star ranking, one of which being how long you're in first place for, thus comeback victorys are not an option as you basically have to be in 1st from start to finish each race.

That's true but as long as you park close enough to the train you'll be in first and then you could have boosted and gone ahead. You took a risk it didn't pay off that's pretty much it. The one thing I do dislike about the kalamari desert remake is that I can't drive on the tracks through the tunnel anymore. I used to enjoy screwing around like that in the n64.
